SAAS Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loan for Professional Legal Practice PGDip

You get a state loan of up to about EUR 8,100 (£7,000) towards the tuition fees of the one-year full-time Professional Legal Practice PGDip at the University of Dundee. If you study full-time, you can add a separate living-cost loan of up to about EUR 8,000 (£6,900). The full package then reaches roughly EUR 16,100 (£13,900). Neither loan depends on your income, so your or your parents' earnings do not change how much you can borrow. The tuition-fee loan is paid straight to the university. The living-cost loan lands in your own bank account in instalments. Both come from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). The course fees are £11,000 per year, so the tuition-fee loan does not cover them fully and you must find the rest elsewhere. You repay later at 9% of your income above about EUR 39,100 (£33,795) per year, and any balance left after 30 years is written off.

Who can apply

• Course: You take a taught Master's or a postgraduate diploma (PGDip), such as the Professional Legal Practice PGDip. PhDs are not covered.
• Where you live: You ordinarily live in Scotland when the course starts, and you have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the last three years.
• Nationality: Open to UK nationals living in Scotland. EU nationals can also qualify if they were living in the UK before 31 December 2020 and have settled or pre-settled status.
• Age: No age limit for the tuition-fee loan. For the living-cost loan you must be under 61 on the first day of the first academic year.
• Previous funding: If you already had SAAS Master's funding, you cannot get another tuition-fee loan, but you may still get a living-cost loan.
• Study mode: Full-time PGDip up to one year, or part-time up to two years. Part-time students do not get the living-cost loan.

How to apply

You apply online through the SAAS MyPortal, using your National Insurance number and your course details. The deadline for 2026/27 is 31 March 2027, so you can still apply after the course has started. Applying before 30 June helps make sure the money is ready at the start of term. You must reapply each academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an entitlement loan, not a competitive scholarship. There is no selection panel and no interview. If you meet the residency, course and nationality conditions, you get the loan. The main thing to check is whether you fit the Scotland residency rules and have not already used SAAS Master's funding.
