About this scholarship

Galway Doctoral Research Scholarship

You will receive a monthly scholarship (a contribution towards living costs) of 1,833 EUR, which amounts to up to 22,000 euros per year. In addition, your tuition fees will be covered. The funding is intended to support full-time doctoral research at the University of Galway in Ireland, at the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies. The duration of the funding is one, two, three or four years, depending on the call for applications. Payment will only be continued each year if your progress is satisfactory. If you are from a country outside the EU, you may apply separately for a university scholarship to cover the additional non-EU portion of your fees.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are starting a full-time, structured PhD programme. If you have already started your PhD, you cannot apply.
  • Field of study: Your research sits within the arts, social sciences or Celtic studies, for example history, geography, archaeology, English, music, philosophy, psychology, sociology, classics, or a modern language such as French, German, Italian or Spanish.
  • University: You’re studying at the University of Galway.
  • Grades: You must hold at least a degree with a ‘First Class’ or ‘Upper Second Class’ (with distinction) classification, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area. If you hold a higher academic qualification, this will generally be given greater weighting than your first degree.
  • Language: You can work in English or Irish. If neither of these languages is your first language, you may need to pass a language test.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Other funding: You may not receive another scholarship at the same time.

How to apply

You send one PDF by email to the college research office. It contains a research statement, a short CV, and the names of two referees. The deadline depends on the call; the 2024 round closed on 20 June at 5 p.m. A panel of three academic staff then decides. They judge your academic strength and how well your project fits the themes of the call. Applicants in their first PhD year are preferred.
