About this award / prize
The Dr. John Beausang Prize
You receive a one-off cash prize of around 200 EUR, awarded once a year by University College Cork (UCC) for the best essay on the Family Attachment Scheme. In this scheme, run by UCC's Department of General Practice, medical students early in their studies visit a family where one member lives with a long-term health problem. They then write about what they learned. A patient representative group judges the essays that reach honours standard, and the best one wins. The prize was set up in 1990 by the widow of Dr. John Beausang, a 1924 UCC graduate, in his memory.
Who can apply
- University: You are a current UCC student.
- Field of study: You study medicine and are taking the modules HC2002 and GM1010, which include the Family Attachment Scheme essay.
- Your essay: It reaches honours standard and is judged the best of those submitted. Two authors can also share the prize.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
There is no separate application. Your essay is part of the continuous assessment for the two modules, and the strongest essays are automatically considered for the prize. Questions can go to the Department of General Practice.
