About this award / prize
What the Maria Grazia Cutuli journalism prize gives you
For a doctoral thesis on the subject of journalism, you will receive prize money of 1,500 EUR. You will also have the opportunity to undertake an internship in the editorial offices of the Italian daily newspaper *Corriere della Sera*. The prize is awarded on a one-off basis and does not constitute ongoing funding. It is awarded by the Fondazione Maria Grazia Cutuli, which was established in memory of the “Corriere della Sera” reporter killed in Afghanistan in 2001. There are also two smaller prize categories, each worth 1,000 euros, for Master’s and Bachelor’s theses at Italian universities.
Who can apply
- Level: To be eligible for the prize, worth 1,500 EUR, you must have completed a PhD thesis.
- Where you studied: Your doctoral degree was awarded by a university in the European Union.
- Timing: You have completed your final dissertation within the two years prior to the deadline.
- Field and topic: Your dissertation focuses on journalism. Topics such as human rights, conflicts, marginalised groups or geopolitical changes are preferred, as these are the subjects Maria Grazia Cutuli has reported on.
- Grade: You graduated with top marks, achieving at least 100 out of 110 or an equivalent mark.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
How to apply
Please send your application to the Prize Secretariat of the Comune di Santa Venerina (Catania, Sicily). Please enclose your CV, two copies of your thesis (on CD-ROM or as a PDF via email) and your degree certificate. An optional cover letter from your supervisor would be an advantage. The application deadline is 31 July.
How realistic are your chances?
This is an annual award presented for a very specific piece of work: an EU doctoral thesis on journalism that has been awarded the highest mark and was completed within the last two years. Due to this narrow focus, the pool of eligible candidates is small. If your doctoral thesis clearly fits within the topics covered by Cutuli and has received a high mark, you are a promising candidate, even though only one prize is awarded each year.
