Extraordinary scholarship of South Tyrol

You will receive a one-off payment of 575 EUR if you find yourself in a sudden financial emergency whilst studying. An example of this is a health crisis that drastically reduces your family’s income. This grant is paid by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol) in northern Italy in addition to the regular student grant. When you apply for the province’s student financial support, you can choose between the standard grant and this exceptional grant. The exceptional grant is intended for people whose income or assets have fallen so sharply that they no longer meet the usual eligibility criteria.

Who can apply

• Level of study: You are enrolled as a full-time student on a first Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Where you study: You are studying at a university or university of applied sciences. If you are studying in South Tyrol, there is no minimum length of stay. If you are studying elsewhere, you must have resided in South Tyrol for at least two years without interruption.
• Nationality: Open to EU citizens and non-EU citizens who hold a valid residence permit.
• Financial need: You can provide evidence of a significant reduction in your family’s income and assets compared with the previous year.
• No double funding: This grant cannot be combined with other public funding for the same degree programme. There are some exceptions, such as Erasmus grants and funding for students with disabilities.

How to apply

Applications must be made online via the myCIVIS portal, together with your regular application for a student grant. The application period runs each year from 22 September to 3 November. You must submit a declaration of income and assets, as well as evidence of your emergency situation – for example, a doctor’s certificate if the reason is a health issue.

How realistic are your chances?

This support is strictly limited. You must be resident in South Tyrol (or studying there), be enrolled as a full-time student, and provide evidence of a recent drop in your family’s income. As a result, the number of those eligible remains small. If your hardship is genuine and you can provide clear evidence of it, your chances are good. A well-documented case is more important here than anything else.
