Holbeck Scholarship

In your first year of study, you will receive a one-off payment of about 2,030 EUR (GBP 1,750). This is a one-off payment and you can spend it on anything you need for your studies: books, equipment, rent or living costs. The money comes from the Holbeck Charitable Trust, a York-based charity which, in partnership with the University of York, administers the grant for school leavers and university graduates from the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Who can apply

• Where you go to school: You are attending a school or university in the Yorkshire and Humber region of England.
• Where you will study: You are applying via UCAS for your first undergraduate degree, which starts next September. This can be at any UK university, not just in York.
• Residence: You are a permanent resident of the United Kingdom and are considered a ‘domestic’ student for the purposes of tuition fees.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Grades: Your projected results are at least equivalent to a grade of ABB at A-level or an equivalent qualification.
• Commitment: You are determined to start and complete a degree.
• At least two of these apply to you: Your household income is below approximately 42,875 GBP (or you receive a hardship grant at school); you would be the first in your family to go to university; or you have overcome a significant challenge, such as a stay in, or leaving, a care home, a disability, a long-term illness, or your status as a refugee or asylum seeker.

How to apply

You apply online and attach a personal statement of no more than 500 words. You will also need a letter of recommendation from a teacher confirming your expected grades. The application deadline for pupils is 9 June.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are quite narrow. You must be a school leaver from Yorkshire and the Humber who meets the academic requirements and fulfils at least two of the criteria relating to financial need or background. This means that the pool of applicants remains small compared to open scholarships. If you clearly meet these conditions and can convincingly explain your circumstances, your chances are good.
