About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a one-off grant from Banco Santander to cover one academic semester (approx. 6 months) at a university in another Ibero-American country. The amount depends on your funding round and the country in question. In the most recent confirmed Spanish round, 3,000 EUR was paid per scholarship; in Mexico, the grant amounted to 50,000 MXN (approximately 2,500 EUR). The money is intended to cover living costs, travel and accommodation expenses, but is not intended to cover all expenses.
Some host universities provide additional benefits. At the University of Alicante, for example, selected students received a lump sum of 250 EUR as well as, depending on the destination country, up to 160 EUR per month, provided they had previously been in receipt of a national scholarship. The exchange takes place under an agreement between your home university and your host university, so your credits will be recognised.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree or a Licentiate degree (Grado/Licenciatura).
- Where you study: Your home university is taking part in the programme. Participating countries include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain and Uruguay.
- Where you go: You are spending the semester at a partner university in an Ibero-American country other than your home country.
- Study progress: You have completed at least half of your degree programme or your first two years of study.
- Grades: You have achieved solid results. In the Mexican round, a grade point average of at least 8.5 (or equivalent) was required.
- Field of study: Anyone can apply.
How to apply
Register on the Santander Scholarship platform and submit your application documents to the International Office at your home university. Your home university will select the scholarship recipients based on your academic achievements and financial need. For the most recent round of applications in Spain, the deadline was at the end of April.
How realistic are your chances?
Selection is carried out by your own university. In the Spanish selection round, 933 places were allocated across all partner universities, meaning that the number of participants at each individual university was small. If your university took part and you clearly met the requirements regarding credit points and grades, your chances were good. Please note that no new round has been opened since the 2020–21 cycle and the programme pages now display ‘Process completed’.
