Travel bursaries for ULB doctoral students

You will receive up to 4,000 EUR for a research stay in another EU country or up to 5,000 EUR for a stay outside the EU. The amount will be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts and covers your travel and accommodation costs. The stay lasts between 2 and 6 months and must form part of your PhD project, either at a foreign university or as part of fieldwork. The programme is run by the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) using its own funds and with travel grants from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB). If you travel to an ‘Orange City’ using sustainable modes of transport, you will receive a bonus of 200 EUR. Airfares will not be reimbursed if you can reach your destination by train in less than 6 hours.

Who can apply

• Level: You are enrolled as a PhD student at the ULB.
• Timing: You are at least in the second year of your PhD.
• Purpose of the trip: Your stay abroad is for research purposes, either at a foreign university or as part of fieldwork relating to your final thesis.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

There are two calls for applications each year, with deadlines on 15 October and 15 March. Your supervisor at the ULB will submit the application on your behalf; you should therefore find a supervisor first. The results of the October call for applications will be announced at the end of December, and those of the March call at the end of May or beginning of June.
