What the EPSRC Doctoral Scholarship gives you

You get a fully funded PhD place at the University of Warwick. All your tuition fees are paid. You also receive a tax-free living allowance at the standard UKRI rate of about 25,700 EUR per year (21,805 GBP for 2026/27, paid monthly). On top of that you get a training grant of up to about 5,900 EUR (5,000 GBP) for costs such as travel, equipment and conferences. Funding runs for 3.5 or 4 years full time, with the option to study part time at 60%. You also get up to 40 days of annual leave and extra support if you have a disability. The money comes from EPSRC, the UK research council for engineering and physical sciences. It reaches you either through a single funded PhD project or through a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), a structured programme that trains a group of students together, such as HetSys, which takes around 10 students a year in computational modelling.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a PhD and do not already hold one.
• Field of study: Your project sits in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine, for example Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or WMG.
• Where you study: You study at the University of Warwick in the UK.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply. Up to 30% of these scholarships can go to international (overseas fee status) students.
• Grades (HetSys CDT): For the HetSys centre you need at least a UK II(i) honours BSc or an integrated master's degree (such as MPhys, MChem, MSci or MEng) in physical sciences, mathematics or engineering.

How to apply

You apply to a specific PhD project through Warwick's online application system, then submit a separate scholarship application by the deadline. Deadlines depend on the project: some run until mid-2026, others stay open until the place is filled. For the HetSys CDT, applications for 2027 entry open in December, and shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

These places are competitive. Warwick plans at least 25 of these scholarships a year plus the CDT groups, but they draw strong applicants from across the sciences. International applicants face tighter odds, since only up to 30% of awards can go to overseas students. If you have a strong degree in a relevant subject and your background clearly fits a specific advertised project, your prospects are solid. Apply early and target projects that match your skills.
