About this scholarship

What You Get

Each scholarship pays €18,000 gross per year, paid in 12 monthly instalments of approximately €1,500. The fellowship lasts one academic year and can be renewed for a second year for particularly outstanding fellows. For the 2026-2027 cycle, 16 scholarships are available.

Types of Scholarship

  • 12 standard scholarships - for research in history, philosophy, or literature.
  • Fondazione Banco di Napoli scholarship - for a project using documents from the historical Archive of the Fondazione Banco di Napoli.
  • 'Federico II' scholarship - for graduates of Italian universities whose final dissertation is in medieval studies.
  • Pio Monte della Misericordia scholarship - for a project using documents from the historical Archive of the Pio Monte della Misericordia di Napoli.
  • 'Raffaele Mattioli' scholarship - for research in the history of economic thought in the modern and contemporary age, or the history of the formation of Italy's ruling class from Unification to the present.

What Fellows Do

From December to May, fellows carry out their research project in Naples and attend courses, seminars, and conferences organised by the Institute. From June onwards, fellows may conduct research at other institutions in Italy or abroad. At the end of the fellowship, each fellow must submit a final report, present a seminar on their findings, and prepare a piece of academic writing for possible publication in the Institute's series.

Fellows also have access to the Institute's library of over 155,000 volumes, 330 current periodicals, and roughly 1,000 new volumes added each year.

Eligibility

  • Age: You must be under 35 years old by the application deadline.
  • Degree: You must hold a university degree or PhD in history, philosophy, or a humanities subject, with your final dissertation discussed before the application deadline.
  • Language: You must have competence in Italian.
  • No repeat funding: You must not have previously received a scholarship from this Institute.
  • Nationality: Open to graduates of both Italian and foreign universities - no nationality restriction.

How to Apply

Submit your application through the online form on the Institute's website. You will need to upload the following documents as PDF files:

  • Copy of your identity card or passport
  • Academic CV including your language competences
  • Degree or PhD certificate showing individual exam marks and overall evaluation
  • Digital copy of your dissertation and a list of up to five publications
  • Abstract of your dissertation (maximum 10 pages)
  • Research project (maximum 10 pages) describing your aims, timeline, materials, and any other institutions where you plan to work
  • Two academic letters of reference

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to a video call interview. The list of winners is published on the Institute's website by the end of October.
