University of Bath - The Trendell Sports Scholarships

What the Trendell Sports Scholarship gives you

You will receive about 2,900 EUR (£2,500) per academic year, which will be paid out to you in cash for you to spend as you wish, for up to three academic years. You will never have to pay it back. Team Bath, the University of Bath’s sports department, awards this grant each year to one student to support elite athletes whilst they are studying. You will not receive any payments during a work placement or placement term.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a full-time student at the University of Bath and are studying on campus. Your course may be a Bachelor’s, Master’s or preparatory programme, and you are studying for at least 30 credits.
• Nationality: You meet the criteria for UK home student status.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Sport: You have the potential to compete at the highest level in athletics, badminton, football, hockey, judo, netball, rugby, swimming or tennis, or you compete at the highest level in another sport. You can compete for Bath and help the university win national university championships.
• Coach backing: A coach from the University of Bath, your home coach or an official from the national governing body must recommend you by providing a detailed written statement of support – not just a contact email.
• Financial need: Priority is given to pupils from households with an annual income of 42,875 GBP or less.
• Clean record: You are not subject to any anti-doping ban and have not been found guilty of any offence under the University’s academic regulations.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form (Microsoft Forms), which also serves as the application form for the Breakthrough Scholarship. Please answer the question 13 with ‘Yes’ to ensure you are considered for named scholarships. The application deadline is 25 September. A selection panel will review the applications in October and notify you of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one Trendell Scholarship is awarded each year, and only students at the University of Bath who can demonstrate outstanding sporting ability are eligible. The pool of applicants is small, but the standards are high. If you can demonstrate that you compete at the highest level, provide a strong recommendation from your coach and meet the household income thresholds, your chances are good. As the scholarship is awarded annually, you must reapply each year.
