Casa de Velázquez Scientific Fellowships

A scholarship is a funded research placement. You will receive 1,000 EUR per month for a stay of one to two months in Madrid or, alternatively, in Barcelona or Lisbon. This amount applies if you arrange your own accommodation. If, instead, you apply for a room in the accommodation block, the scholarship amounts to 750 EUR per month, with accommodation included. PhD students enrolled at a university in Africa or Latin America may also claim up to 300 EUR towards travel expenses, subject to the submission of supporting documents. Scholars based in Madrid receive a subsidised lunch on weekdays. The scholarship is awarded by the research school (EHEHI) of the Casa de Velázquez, a French research institute in Madrid founded in 1928.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student and are enrolled on a PhD programme for the academic year 2026–2027.
• Field: Your research is in the field of the humanities or social sciences and relates to the Iberian Peninsula, the Maghreb or the Atlantic world of the colonial era. Art and research projects (Recherche-Création) are also eligible.
• Why the stay: Your work really does need a short stay on the Iberian Peninsula.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Age: You are older than 18. There is no upper age limit.
• Where you live: Anyone can apply, but preference will be given to those living outside the Iberian Peninsula.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Casa de Velázquez online portal by 9 October (13:00 Madrid time). You may submit proof of your enrolment as a PhD student by email by 31 October. A selection committee will meet in mid-November and notify each applicant of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a highly targeted scholarship. You must be a PhD student whose research project clearly aligns with the specific regions and themes of the Casa and for which a stay in Spain is genuinely necessary. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is significantly smaller than for open scholarships. If you meet these criteria, live outside the Iberian Peninsula (which is preferred by the organisation) and submit a focused research proposal, your chances are good.
