DUO-Singapore Fellowship

A scholarship is a form of financial support that you do not have to repay. You will receive up to 4,000 EUR to cover your flight costs, accommodation and living expenses whilst you spend a semester or a full academic year in Singapore as part of an exchange programme. The funding comes from the Singapore Government (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). It covers only part of your costs and is therefore intended to supplement your existing funds. You do not have to repay it and there is no obligation to work.

The scholarship is awarded in pairs: two students always travel together. A student from a European university travels to Singapore, and a student from Singapore travels in the opposite direction. Both must come from and return to the same partner universities. If your partner withdraws from the programme, you will both lose the scholarship.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a full-time undergraduate student.
• Where you study: Your European university is a partner of one of the four host universities in Singapore: Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University or the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
• Nationality: You are from a European ASEM member country, including all EU countries.
• Exchange place: You have already been accepted onto your university’s exchange programme with one of its partner universities in Singapore. This scholarship is intended solely to fund an exchange that has already been agreed. The exchange will not be organised on your behalf.
• Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

Apply via the university with which you are undertaking an exchange programme. The university will shortlist the applicants, and the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs will then make the final decision based on academic merit. The application deadline is 31 March. At NUS, for example, you will complete an online application form, and shortlisted students will be asked to submit further documents.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is highly competitive. Only a few couples are awarded funding each year, and at NUS, hundreds of applicants compete for around three places. To be eligible for the grant, you must already have secured an exchange place and find a suitable partner from Singapore – so everything has to fall into place. With good grades, a confirmed exchange place and an early application, you stand a real chance. Treat the exchange itself as your main goal and this grant as a bonus.
