Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde - ITM Scholarships

What you get

You receive a full or partial grant to study at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp, Belgium. The money comes from Belgium's development-cooperation budget and supports students from low- and middle-income countries. Depending on your ranking and the funds available, the grant can cover your enrolment and tuition fees, compulsory insurance, accommodation and a monthly living allowance for your time in Belgium. A full grant is worth around EUR 16,900.

A PhD grant can run up to 48 months, of which at most 24 in Belgium. It also covers travel and living costs in both your home country and Belgium. For short courses and master's programmes, the grant does not cover your flights to and from Belgium, except in rare cases that you must apply for separately.

Who can apply

• What you study: You come to ITM in Antwerp for a master's programme, a short course, a traineeship (including pre-doctoral), a PhD or a postdoctoral stay. Programmes that only lead to a postgraduate certificate are not funded.
• Nationality and residence: You are a citizen of a low- or middle-income country (on the OECD-DAC list) and you live there. Students from any such country can apply. Priority goes to partner countries including Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam.
• No high-income ties: You cannot apply if you also hold the nationality of a high-income country. You are also out if you worked in one for more than a year during the last three years.
• Age: You are at most 45 years old when you finish the programme.
• Admission first: You must first be accepted into the course on academic merit. Only then can you receive a grant.
• Work experience: You are at an early or mid stage of your career. At least 2 years of relevant work is a plus, as is a job you can return to and apply what you learn.
• Preferences: When candidates are otherwise equal, women are preferred. The same goes for applicants who have never had a grant like this or studied in Europe before.

How to apply

You apply online through ITM's application form. Request the grant at the same time as you apply for your course, using the grant form you download during the process. Your course application is first judged on academic merit. Only admitted candidates are then considered for funding. ITM and the donor jointly award the grants to the top-ranked applicants who meet all conditions.
