You will receive about 38,200 EUR per year (approximately £32,690) for a Master’s or PhD programme at the University of Cambridge. In addition, you will receive a research allowance of approximately 1,300 EUR (£1,100) per year. This is a full scholarship. It covers your tuition fees at the University and at your college at the domestic rate, as well as your living costs, and may also cover approved training costs. The funding covers the entire duration of your studies, typically 1 to 3 years, and cannot be extended. The scholarship is awarded by the Schiff Foundation and administered by the University of Cambridge. Around four scholarships are awarded each year.

Who can apply

• Level: You are applying for a Master’s or PhD programme at Cambridge and have not yet started your studies.
• Field of study: Your field of expertise lies in engineering, physics, chemical engineering, materials science and metallurgy, or a related scientific discipline. You are also welcome to apply if you come from a different field but would now like to move into these areas.
• Study mode: Both full-time and part-time study are possible.
• Industry link: Preference is given to projects with a clear industrial benefit, particularly for British industry. You should therefore be prepared to explain how your work contributes to this.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply; however, in accordance with the founder’s wishes, preference may be given to British applicants.
• Not already researching: If you have already started a PhD project, this prize is not an option for you.

When applying for your degree programme, please apply via the Cambridge applicant portal. Tick the box to indicate that you wish to be considered for financial support. The application deadline is 15 April. Successful applicants are usually notified by email by the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective: only a handful are awarded each year, and these are granted to specific departments in the natural sciences and engineering at a single university. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships, but admission to Cambridge is in itself highly competitive. If you clearly fit into one of the specified subject areas, can demonstrate a genuine connection to industry and apply by the deadline, your chances are good. British citizenship may be an advantage.
