About this scholarship

What the Exchange Scholarship gives you

You will receive a monthly grant of approximately 550 EUR to undertake a study period abroad as part of one of Johannes Kepler University Linz’s (JKU) exchange programmes. For stays in Europe under Erasmus+ (the EU exchange programme), the grant amounts to 470 to 520 EUR per month, depending on the country, and in special cases up to 700 EUR for 2024/25. For universities outside Europe, JKU pays its own grant of 1,000 to 1,800 EUR per semester, depending on the destination, as well as a flat-rate travel allowance of up to 1,000 EUR. Shorter stays are funded on a pro rata basis. If you are going abroad with your children or have a disability or chronic illness, you will receive an additional 250 EUR per month under the Erasmus+ programme. Two additional allowances may top up this amount. If you have had your main residence in Upper Austria for at least one year and there is still a funding shortfall, you can apply to the provincial government for up to 100 EUR extra per month. The costs of language courses may also be reimbursed.

Who can apply

  • University: You are enrolled as a student at Johannes Kepler University Linz.
  • Exchange place: You already have a confirmed place on an exchange programme. You cannot apply until this has been approved.
  • Where you go: You are studying at a European university (Erasmus+) or at a university outside Europe (JKU scholarship).
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Your nationality is irrelevant.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via JKU’s online form, which every exchange student is required to complete. There are two deadlines: 1 June for stays beginning in the winter semester (earliest start date in July), and 1 November for stays beginning in the summer semester. You cannot submit the form until your exchange place has been confirmed.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is an internal JKU scholarship, the pool of applicants is limited: only JKU students who have already secured an exchange place may apply. If you are enrolled at JKU and your exchange place has been confirmed, this scholarship is the standard funding linked to your exchange – it is not a competition that you might lose. Simply apply by the deadline for your semester.
