Propondis Foundation scholarship for a master's abroad

You will receive a monthly scholarship to fund a Master’s degree programme outside Greece for up to 24 months. The Greek non-profit Propondis Foundation, which was established in 1999 by a family of shipowners, awards up to 20 of these scholarships each year. The focus is on shipping-related and technical disciplines, meaning this is targeted support for a specific group of Greek graduates. The foundation does not disclose the exact monthly amount.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting a Master’s degree programme abroad. You may also apply as a final-year student if you are due to graduate by 30 June of the application year, or if you are already enrolled and have at least one semester remaining before graduation.
• Field of study: Maritime studies, maritime law, company law, shipbuilding and marine engineering, or economics.
• Where you study: Any university abroad. If you choose a country outside Europe, you must explain why this degree programme is superior to the European alternatives.
• Nationality: You are a Greek national. Your application and tax documents must be in Greek.
• Age: You fall under 26. Men who have completed their military service may apply up to the age of 28. You must not exceed the age limit by 31 December of the year in which you apply.
• Grades: Your final mark at a Greek university is at least 7.0 out of 10. Abroad, this is roughly equivalent to a British 2.2, a US or Canadian 2.5/4.0, the French ‘Assez Bien’ or the German ‘Gut’.
• Language proof: You hold an official foreign language certificate.

How to apply

You should apply by email to the foundation, which will send you the application and interview forms directly. The application deadline is 12 February. You should submit your CV, your degree certificate and academic transcripts, your letter of admission or correspondence with your chosen university, letters of reference and proof of income. A structured interview forms part of the selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very strictly defined. You must be a Greek university graduate under the 26 scheme, have excellent academic results, and be enrolled on one of the few degree programmes abroad in the fields of shipping or economics. This keeps the pool of applicants small, and with 20 places available, a suitable applicant has very good prospects. It is crucial that the requirements regarding field of study and grades are clearly met and that the application is submitted on time with all the necessary documents.
