SPIE Student Conference Support

You get help paying to attend an SPIE conference where you present your own work. There are two parts, and you can get one or both: a travel grant and a waiver of the conference registration fee. The travel grant is up to about 650 EUR (700 USD) for travel and lodging inside your own country, or up to about 930 EUR (1,000 USD) for international travel. You get the travel money back after the conference by bank transfer once you show your receipts. SPIE (the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers) runs conferences on optics, photonics, medical imaging and related fields. Only a limited number of these awards are given each round.

Who can apply

• Membership: You are an SPIE Student Member, and your membership runs at least until the conference ends.
• Level: You are in high school, or in a bachelor's or master's programme. You have not yet finished a PhD, ScD or MD.
• Your role: Your paper is accepted at the conference, you are the presenting author, and you present in person.
• Publication: You submit your manuscript for publication in the Proceedings of SPIE.
• How often: You can get this support only once every two years.
• Where you can be based: Students of any country can apply. US law can restrict cash awards to residents of some countries, so you must be allowed to receive funds under US rules.

How to apply

Not every SPIE conference offers this support. Check which conferences currently take applications, then apply through that conference's own link before its deadline. You hear back within one to two weeks after the deadline. Do not register and pay for the conference before you apply, because those fees may not be refundable.

How realistic are your chances?

The requirements narrow the field sharply. You must already have an accepted paper and be the one presenting it, which most casual applicants will not have. Even among that group, only a limited number get funded, so it stays competitive. If you clearly meet the criteria, apply as soon as your conference's window opens.
