About this scholarship
What you get
You get a monthly payment of about EUR 2,100 (£21,805 per year in 2026-27, tax-free) for 3.5 years, plus full payment of your PhD tuition fees. On top of that you get a one-off research grant of about EUR 5,800 (£5,000) for costs such as travel, archives or conferences. The package also includes up to 40 days of paid annual leave, paid short-term, family and medical leave, and the option to pause your studies. Chancellor's scholars can also apply for help with the cost of moving to the UK. Warwick's Doctoral College pays the money, and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) nominates strong candidates. You can study full time or part time (60%).
Who can apply
- Degree level: You apply for a PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, or the PhD stage of an MRes+PhD at the University of Warwick.
- Field of study: The Chancellor's Scholarship is open to any subject. The AHRC Scholarship is for projects in the arts and humanities. The SMLC covers French, German, Hispanic, Italian, and Translation and Transcultural Studies.
- Where and when you study: You study at the University of Warwick in the UK, starting in October 2026. You cannot defer your place to a later year.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply, from the UK or abroad.
- Current status: You are not already a postgraduate research student, unless a scheme allows it.
- Academic record: You have excellent grades and a well-developed research proposal that fits the School's areas of expertise.
How to apply
You take two steps at the same time. First, apply for a study place through Warwick's admissions system by 8 December 2025 (16:59 GMT). Then submit one funding application through the scholarship portal by 11 December 2025 (16:59 GMT). That single funding application is automatically considered for every scheme you qualify for. Contact a potential supervisor early to shape your proposal. Results are sent by email in late February 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
These awards are competitive, and the School nominates only its strongest candidates before the Doctoral College makes the final call. A good match with excellent grades, a sharp proposal in one of the SMLC's language and culture fields, and early supervisor contact stands out. Because supervisor fit weighs heavily, reaching out before the December deadlines is what separates serious applications from the rest.
