What you get

Are you an EU student starting a full-time bachelor's degree at UWE Bristol in 2026/27 and counted as a "home" student? Then you can apply for UK government student loans. There are two. A tuition fee loan of up to about EUR 11,300 (GBP 9,790) per year covers your course fees and does not depend on your income. A maintenance loan of up to about EUR 12,500 (GBP 10,830) per year covers living costs and depends on your household income. If you live with your parents while you study, the maintenance loan drops to about EUR 10,500 (GBP 9,118) per year. Student Finance England (or the equivalent body in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) pays this out. It is state funding, not a UWE scholarship, and you repay it later.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting a full-time bachelor's course at UWE Bristol.
• Residence status: This is the deciding factor. You need "settled" or "pre-settled" status under the EU Settlement Scheme. These are the residence rights EU citizens got after Brexit. Without one of them, you cannot get home fees or student finance in your own name.
• With settled status: You get the full package (fee loan plus maintenance loan) if you have lived in the UK and Islands for the three years before your course starts.
• With pre-settled status: You usually get home fees and the fee loan if you have three years' residence in the UK, Gibraltar, EEA or Switzerland. You only get the maintenance loan in certain cases, for example if you work in the UK.
• Already studying: If you began your course by 31 July 2021 and were assessed as eligible then, you keep that eligibility for the rest of the course.
• Irish citizens: You count as settled automatically and do not need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. You still need three years' UK residence for the full package.

How to apply

You do not apply to UWE for this. You apply for Student Finance online at gov.uk, or through Student Finance Wales, the Student Awards Agency for Scotland, or Student Finance Northern Ireland, depending on where you live. You prove your EU Settlement Scheme status with a share code, which is valid for 30 days. Apply as soon as your place is confirmed, because processing takes time.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive scholarship with limited places, so there is no selection round to pass. Whether you get the funding comes down entirely to your residence status and history. If you hold settled or pre-settled status and meet the three-year residence rule, you are entitled to the loans. If you do not, you will not qualify, so check the eligibility rules carefully before you rely on this money.
