Radboud University faculty scholarship for the Master's in Theology

You get 10,500 EUR per year to study the English-taught Master's in Theology at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The money covers your tuition fees (around 2,530 EUR for 2024-2025) plus living costs. If you take the one-year Master (60 EC), you are funded for one year. If you take the three-year Master (180 EC), the award runs for up to three years. Each year it is renewed as long as your grades stay good enough. The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies awards about three of these scholarships per round.

Who can apply

• Degree: You hold a Bachelor's degree in theology or a related subject.
• Programme: You are enrolled, or plan to enrol, in the one-year (60 EC) or three-year (180 EC) Master's in Theology at Radboud University.
• Where you study: You study on campus in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
• Nationality: You come from abroad, mainly other EU/EEA countries, but not the Netherlands. The award is built around EU tuition fees, so non-EU/EEA students should look at Radboud's other scholarship programmes instead.
• Academic strength: You show strong academic results through your transcript, a writing sample, your motivation letter and references.
• Preferred (a plus, not a requirement): People from backgrounds underrepresented in theology, especially women, and those aiming for a career in the Catholic Church are encouraged to apply.

How to apply

First apply for the Master's programme itself through Studielink, the Dutch admission portal. This step is free and non-binding. Once that is done, upload your scholarship documents in OSIRIS by 1 April for a September start. These include a motivation letter, CV, two references, transcripts and an academic essay of 2,000 to 2,500 words. A Skype interview may be part of the selection, and the committee aims to tell you its decision before 1 May.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: one specific Master's programme, a theology or related Bachelor behind you, and roughly three places per round. The applicant pool is small, but so is the number of scholarships. If you clearly fit the profile and submit a strong essay and motivation letter, your prospects are reasonable. When several strong applicants compete, the committee gives priority to those with a record of volunteering or a clear vision for a responsible role in church or society, so make that concrete.
