About this scholarship
Benefit
You receive a monthly grant based on your family's income, paid in 10 instalments over a full academic year straight to your bank account. It is a non-repayable grant from the Portuguese state. It helps cover the cost of studying or of a compulsory work placement. If you start your first year and your family received the first tier of the Portuguese child benefit (abono de familia) on 31 May of the previous year, you also get a one-off top-up called the Bolsa de Incentivo. It is worth twice the annual social-support index (IAS). For 2026/2027 the IAS is 522.50 EUR, so the top-up is about 1,045 EUR. The grant is run by the Instituto para o Ensino Superior, I.P. (IES, I.P.), the body that took over from the former DGES.
Eligibility
- Where you study: You study at a public higher-education institution in Portugal. Every recognised level counts: short-cycle (CTeSP), bachelor (licenciatura), integrated master, master or doctorate. A compulsory professional placement is also covered.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Financial need: Your household income is below the minimum level set in the grant rules, and you can prove it.
- Nationality or residence: You qualify if you are a Portuguese national; an EU citizen with permanent residence in Portugal (or their family); a non-EU national with a permanent or long-term residence permit, or from a country with an agreement granting these benefits; stateless; or a recognised political refugee.
- Not for international-status students: If you are enrolled under the international student status, you cannot apply, except in humanitarian emergencies.
How to apply
You apply online only, through the IES student portal at dges.gov.pt/wwwBeOn. For 2026/2027 the window runs from 14 August to 2 October 2026. You can still apply late, from 3 October 2026 to 31 May 2027. In that case the grant only covers the months from after you apply to the end of term. New applicants get their login from the social-support office (SAS or GAS) at their own institution.
