What you get

You will receive a one-off payment of 434 EUR if you are studying a science or engineering subject at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and have achieved good grades. The grant is paid as a one-off payment by the university’s ‘Macroarea di Scienze’, the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences. The number of grants awarded varies each year, meaning that in some rounds there are more places available than in others. In the academic year 2021/22, there were 216 places, and in the academic year 2022/23, there were 96 places.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
• Field of study: You are studying one of the following subjects in the natural sciences or engineering: biotechnology, biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, computer science, mathematics, media studies and technology, bioinformatics or nutritional science. This applies to both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.
• Timing: You completed the first year of one of these degree programmes last academic year and are enrolled again this year.
• Fees: You have paid your tuition fees and other university fees by the deadline.
• Grades: The ranking is based solely on your academic performance. Half of the score is derived from the credit points (CFU) you have earned to date, and the other half from your weighted average mark. Only examinations taken at Tor Vergata University or abroad as part of an Erasmus exchange programme are taken into account.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• No double funding: You have not yet received any other merit-based university scholarship for the same academic year.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application. The university compiles the ranking list automatically based on the marks and details it already has on file. It will then publish a provisional list and, following a short appeal period, a final list. If you are offered a place, please reply to the university’s email within 10 days to receive your payment.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is restricted to first-year students on certain science degree programmes at a university, the pool of applicants for the individual funding places is small. Your prospects depend on your marks and credit points relative to those of other students on your course, as a fixed number of funding places are available for each subject. If you can demonstrate good academic performance early on and only a few of your fellow students are performing better than you, your chances are good.
