The Manchester Bursary

During your studies, you will receive a grant of up to 2,600 GBP per year (approximately 3,000 EUR), which you will never have to repay. The amount depends on your household income. If your remaining household income is up to 31,000 GBP, you will receive 2,600 GBP per year. If it is between 31,001 and 43,000 GBP, you will receive 1,300 GBP per year. The grant is available for the entire duration of your studies, although your income will be reassessed each year. The University of Manchester pays the amount in three instalments in December, February and April, in addition to any government student grants you may receive.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled on an eligible Bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Manchester.
• Where you study: You are studying in the UK. If you are spending a year abroad or doing an internship, a different scholarship will apply instead.
• Nationality: You are a student from the UK.
• Field of study: Open to all degree programmes. If you are studying nursing, midwifery or a related healthcare degree (e.g. speech and language therapy) and receive funding from the NHS, you are not eligible to apply. Medical and dental students are eligible to take part in the years when they receive only limited funding from the NHS.
• Financial need: Your remaining household income is no more than 43,000 GBP.
• Income check: Student Finance England has carried out a comprehensive assessment of your household income, and you have agreed to allow this information to be passed on to the university.

How to apply

Full-time students do not need to submit a separate application. The university will check who is eligible during the first 6 to 8 weeks of the semester and will notify you by email in November. If you have not received a reply by December and believe that you should have done so, please contact the Student Support Team using the online form. Your assessment for student finance must be completed by 31 May of the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a selection process where you can be rejected on the basis of your own academic performance. If you are a UK undergraduate student in Manchester, meet the income threshold and have passed the Student Finance assessment, you will receive the funding automatically. The only things that matter are whether your household income falls within the specified limits and whether your degree programme is eligible for funding. Make sure your ‘Student Finance’ assessment is completed in good time before 31 May so that you do not miss out on the funding.
