What the Bogliasco Fellowship gives you

You will be awarded a one-month residency (a paid residency to work on your project) at the Bogliasco Centre on the Italian coast near Genoa. You will be provided with a single room, all meals, and your own study or studio for the entire duration of your stay. The Bogliasco Foundation, an American non-profit organisation, awards around 60 of these residencies each year to artists and scholars from around the world, enabling them to focus on a new project without distractions. There is no salary or living allowance, and you will be responsible for the cost of your own travel to and from the centre.

In the case of a small number of ‘Special Fellowships’, a travel allowance (a one-off cash payment) is also awarded. Examples: approximately 900 euros (1,000 US dollars) for a US composer, or approximately 4,600 euros (5,000 US dollars) for a visual artist via 40. You will automatically be considered for these fellowships if you meet the eligibility criteria; a separate application is therefore not required.

Who can apply

• Your field: You work in one of the following fields: archaeology, architecture, classical philology, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, public humanities, theatre or fine art.
• Track record: You can demonstrate genuine achievements in your field that are commensurate with your age and experience. You must submit three examples of your work that have been published, performed or exhibited within the last five years.
• Not a student: At the time of your application, you are not enrolled on a degree programme.
• Nationality and age: Open to all nationalities and all age groups, with no restrictions based on gender, ethnicity or religion.
• Language: You can have a conversation in English, the common language that takes centre stage.
• Past fellows: If you have already received a Bogliasco Fellowship, you must wait five years before you can apply again. Where applicants are equally qualified, preference will be given to first-time applicants.

How to apply

Applications are made via the online portal, which opens every autumn. There are two application deadlines each year: around 1 December for the autumn semester and around 14 March for the spring semester. There is a small application fee of around 27 euros (30 US dollars), which rises to around 41 euros (45 US dollars) in the final week. You will need two letters of recommendation, a short CV, a one-page project description in English and three samples of your work. A selection panel makes its decision based solely on the documents submitted; there is no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This is one of the world’s leading residency programmes for the arts and humanities. It is open to applicants from all over the world and from a wide range of disciplines, meaning that the pool of applicants is large and competition is fierce. Selection is based solely on your portfolio and your project proposal, not on grades or connections. First-time applicants have an advantage over returning fellows. So, if you can demonstrate a clearly defined project and a track record of success, your chances are good.
