What the CNLB project grant gives you

You will receive a grant of one-off cash grant to carry out a specific music project in France. There is no fixed amount. The amount is determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on your needs and the significance of the project, and the duration may be up to 24 months. The funding comes from the Centre international Nadia et Lili Boulanger (CNLB) in Paris, which has been supporting young musicians since 1984. Recent grants have funded, amongst other things, the recording of works by a female composer, the composition of a piece for voice and piano, and research into female musicians.

Who can apply

• What you do: You are a high-calibre artist, composer or musicologist (someone who specialises in music research).
• Your project: You wish to carry out a specific music project in France. It must relate to one of the following four themes: a voice-and-piano duo that has taken part in the CNLB competition; the composition of works for voice and piano; research or recordings relating to the Boulanger family or to female composers, performers and patrons; or projects centred on music education and the promotion of music.
• Age: At the time the application deadline falls, you will be between 20 and 32 years old.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• References: There are three people who can provide a written reference for you and your project.

How to apply

You must submit a complete application to the CNLB by 30 June. This must include the application form, your CV, a detailed description of your project and three letters of reference. Composers must also include a score and a recording of one of their works. An international jury will assess the applications in July, and the grant amounts and results will be announced in October.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. You need a compelling, specific music project that fits one of four specified themes and takes place in France, and you must be between 20 and 32 years old. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-prepared musician who clearly fits one of the themes and can provide three solid references has a genuine chance of success. The grant is awarded for serious, concrete projects rather than general study plans, so a concise, well-reasoned application is particularly important.
