About this scholarship

Care Experienced and Estranged Bursary at King's College London

You get about EUR 1,150 (£1,000) per academic year, renewed every year you still meet the conditions. King's College London gives this bursary to undergraduate students who grew up in care or have lost contact with their family. You also get practical support: guaranteed accommodation in a King's hall for every year of study, 52-week housing contracts so you keep your room over the summer, a named wellbeing advisor, and priority access to further funding. That further funding includes the Broadening Horizons Bursary of up to about EUR 1,035 (£900) for study abroad.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are studying an undergraduate (first) degree at King's College London.
  • Your situation: You spent time in care (foster family or children's home, at any point and for any length, including if you were later adopted), or you are estranged. Estranged means you have permanently lost contact with both parents and no longer get their support.
  • Age: You are under 25 on 1 September of the year your course starts.
  • Fees: You pay home (UK) fees. Overseas fee payers whose time in care was in the UK may also qualify.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.

How to apply

You do not send a separate application. King's awards the bursary automatically once it has verified your care-experienced or estranged status. You confirm your status through an online form and supporting documents. You then have a first meeting with your Faculty Wellbeing Advisor, a staff member assigned to support you, to start the payment. Verification for care-experienced students runs from 11 September 2025 to 26 June 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition. If you are a King's undergraduate who fits one of the defined groups and can prove it, you get the bursary. There is no selection to lose out on. The real hurdle is verification: gathering confirmation of your care or estranged status, for example from Student Finance England. Get that paperwork in early and your chances are effectively certain.
