About this scholarship

What the Wellcome PhD Studentship offers

You get a yearly stipend of about EUR 29,700 to EUR 31,800 (£25,755 to £27,595) if you study outside London, or about EUR 32,100 to EUR 34,400 (£27,872 to £29,863) if you study in London. The stipend is your basic living allowance. It is paid across four years and rises each year. The scheme also covers your PhD registration fees at the UK home rate, college fees where needed, lab rotation costs, research costs, training in transferable skills, travel to conferences, and childcare or other care costs. You can hold the studentship part time. The funder is the Wellcome Trust, a large UK charity that pays for health and science research. This scheme is now closed and no longer takes new applications.

Who could apply

  • Degree: You have, or expect to get, a degree in a relevant subject. For EU and overseas candidates, an equivalent qualification counts. Other relevant qualifications or research experience could also count.
  • Level: You want to do a four-year PhD (a doctoral research degree).
  • Field of study: Science, such as mental health, stem cell biology, infectious diseases, genomics, neuroscience and drug discovery. It could include training in social science, engineering, maths, physics or chemistry.
  • Where you study: At one of Wellcome's partner universities and research institutes in the UK, for example Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, UCL and King's College London.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply. UK and Irish nationals pay the lower home fees. Everyone else, including EU and EEA nationals since 1 January 2021, pays international fees.
  • Restriction: You cannot use the funding for work that moves grant money into mainland China.

How you applied

You did not apply to Wellcome directly. Instead you applied to the individual PhD programme at the partner university you wanted to join. Recruitment ran each autumn, with courses starting in October.
