What the Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship gives you

You will be awarded a full scholarship at Harvard University in the United States. This covers all tuition fees, the compulsory health insurance fee and a living allowance (a regular cash payment) for a single student. Funding is guaranteed for up to two years for multi-year degree programmes, or for one year for one-year degree programmes or courses not leading to a degree. The funding comes from a donation to Harvard University amounting to 1945 and is administered by the university’s ‘Committee on General Scholarships’. Around 15 new scholarship holders are selected each year.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a citizen of Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the United Kingdom and are ordinarily resident there.
• Where you studied: You have completed most of your education in your home country and have obtained, or are about to obtain, a university degree there.
• Level: You are commencing a postgraduate programme at Harvard University: a Master’s, a PhD or a professional qualification. Bachelor’s degree programmes, part-time programmes, online programmes, executive education programmes and postdoctoral programmes are not eligible for funding.
• Harvard admission: You are also applying for a full-time degree programme at a graduate school or university of applied sciences in Harvard and are accepted. The scholarship will only be awarded once Harvard has accepted you.
• Field of study: Any field of study is acceptable, provided it is a full-time programme at a Harvard University graduate school. Applicants seeking to obtain a degree will be given preference over those not seeking a degree.
• Not yet in the US: You do not yet live in the United States.
• Academic record: You have excellent grades, a strong character and leadership potential in your field.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via your country’s national portal. The Canadian application round begins in October. The application deadline is 3 November. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a face-to-face interview at the start of the new year. Your place will be confirmed as soon as Harvard has admitted you.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly sought-after. Each year, only around 15 scholarship recipients are selected across four countries, and applicants must also secure a place at Harvard, which is in itself a highly competitive process. Good grades are a basic requirement, but not the decisive factor; therefore, evidence of leadership qualities and strength of character is what sets applicants apart from the rest. If you have achieved exceptional results and have a clear reason for wanting to study at Harvard, it is worth applying – but bear in mind that selection is by no means guaranteed.
