The IMRCEES - Erasmus Mundus International Masters in Russian, Central East European Studies (IMRCEES) Scholarships

What the IMRCEES scholarship offered

The Erasmus Mundus IMRCEES scholarship funded a two-year (24-month) Master's in Russian, Central and Eastern European Studies. It was funded by the European Commission and managed by the University of Glasgow. You spent your first year in Glasgow, Scotland, and your second year at a partner university in Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Poland or Kazakhstan. Upon completion, you were awarded a double degree, i.e. one degree from each of the two universities. The programme ran from 2012 to 2018 and awarded up to 17 scholarships per intake, totalling around 800,000 EUR for the first cycle of studies. Places were allocated between applicants from countries outside the EU and applicants from EU/EEA countries. Additional funded places were allocated to students from the Western Balkans, Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and the eastern neighbouring countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine).

Who could apply

• Degree: You hold a British 2.1 honours degree or an equivalent foreign qualification, e.g. with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Field of study: A degree in the social sciences or humanities was expected, but applicants from other disciplines were also considered.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality were eligible to apply. The funding category depended on whether or not they were from the EU/EEA.
• English: If English was not your first language, you needed a language test certificate that was no more than two years old.
• No double funding: If you have already received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship, you were not eligible to apply again.

Programme status

The IMRCEES programme ended in 2018. It was succeeded by CEERES (Central & East European, Russian & Eurasian Studies), which is run by the same consortium under the leadership of the University of Glasgow. CEERES is not currently accepting applications, and there is no intake for the September 2026 intake. The one-year Master’s programme in ‘Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies’ (REES) in Glasgow follows a similar curriculum and remains open for applications.
