UAM short research stays for doctoral researchers

You get a daily allowance plus a travel refund to spend 2 to 3 months at a research centre in Spain or abroad. The daily allowance is up to 20 EUR per day in Spain and up to 40 EUR per day abroad. Travel is covered up to 90 to 140 EUR within Spain, up to 250 EUR for a European destination and up to 900 EUR for the rest of the world, plus any visa fees. The money comes from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) to help its young researchers work at another institution. If you stay at least 3 months abroad at one institution, you can also apply for the international mention on your doctorate, an extra note on your degree recognising research abroad.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a teaching assistant (ayudante) or doctoral student listed in the UAM's register of researchers in training (PIF). Your entry must stay valid during the stay.
• No competing contract: You do not hold a predoctoral contract with any institution other than the UAM. If you have already defended your thesis but still hold an active assistant contract, you can apply.
• No equivalent funding: You do not already have access to a comparable short-stay grant.
• Where you go: The host centre must be in a different town from where you do your thesis, and you must move there for the stay.
• Country rule: Any nationality can apply. You just cannot go to your own country of nationality, unless your thesis supervisor justifies an exception.
• One only: You can receive this grant once.

How to apply

You apply online through the UAM's electronic office (Sede Electrónica) before your stay begins. Late applications are not accepted. The research commission reviews applications three times a year, in June, September and December. You need at least 6 out of 10 points, scored on your project, the host centre, the length of the stay and whether you plan to seek the international doctorate mention.
