Taiwan Scholarship Program (Bachelor)

You will receive a monthly living allowance of approximately 430 EUR (NTD 15,000). You will also receive a study grant of up to approximately 1,150 EUR (40,000 NTD) per semester. The funding is available for up to 4 years, provided you are studying for a bachelor’s degree in Taiwan. The Taiwanese Ministry of Education (MOE) funds this scheme to attract international students to Taiwanese universities. With a work permit, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and an unlimited number of hours during the holidays. If your tuition fees exceed the amount covered, you will need to pay the remainder yourself.

Who can apply

• Degree: You would like to complete a full Bachelor’s degree programme at a university in Taiwan.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• School leaving: You have a secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur or equivalent).
• Grades: You’ve got very good marks.
• Nationality: You are a foreign national. You are not eligible to apply if you are a Taiwanese citizen, an overseas Chinese, or a national of mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao.
• Not already in Taiwan: You are not yet enrolled or admitted to a Taiwanese university. Exception: You are in your final year of study and are aiming to obtain a higher qualification.
• No other Taiwan funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship from a Taiwanese government agency. Furthermore, you have not received a Taiwanese scholarship in the last 5 years, and such a scholarship has never been withdrawn from you.
• Language: For degree programmes taught in Chinese, you will need a TOCFL result (an exam to assess Chinese language proficiency) at level 3 or higher. For degree programmes taught entirely in English, you may submit a recognised English language certificate, such as the TOEFL.

How to apply

You need to apply to two different organisations. Firstly, apply to the Taiwanese higher education institution for a place on a course. Secondly, apply to the Taiwanese diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) in your home country for the scholarship. The application period for the scholarship usually runs from 1 February to 31 March each year. Each diplomatic mission conducts its own selection process, and the Ministry of Education confirms the final awards.

How realistic are your chances?

Each regional representative office has its own quota, so the number of places available depends on where you live. Good academic results are essential. As university places are allocated by region and the language and admission requirements weed out casual applicants, a suitable student with good grades and a clear plan for studying in Taiwan has solid prospects.
