Taiwan Scholarship Program

You will receive monthly living allowance of up to about 630 EUR. Undergraduate students receive 15,000 NTD (approximately 425 EUR); Master’s and PhD students receive 20,000 NTD (approximately 570 EUR). You will also receive a tuition fee subsidy of up to approximately 1,150 EUR per semester (40,000 NTD). If your tuition fees are higher, you will have to pay the difference yourself. The funding covers the standard duration of study: up to 4 years for a Bachelor’s degree, 2 years for a Master’s degree and 4 years for a PhD, but never exceeding a total of 5 years. The Taiwanese Ministry of Education funds this grant to attract international students to Taiwanese universities. The grant does not cover the costs of accommodation, insurance, internet or administrative fees.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You would like to start a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at a university in Taiwan.
• School leaving: You must have at least a secondary school leaving certificate.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.
• Nationality: You are a foreign national. You are not eligible to apply if you hold Taiwanese (Republic of China) nationality or are from mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau.
• Not already studying in Taiwan: You are not yet enrolled on a Taiwanese degree programme. Exception: You may apply if you are due to complete your current degree programme this year and are planning to progress to a higher-level degree programme.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Chinese language: If your degree programme is not taught entirely in English, you will need a TOCFL certificate at level 3 or higher. TOCFL is Taiwan’s Chinese language proficiency test. For degree programmes taught entirely in English, a TOEFL certificate or a similar English language certificate will be accepted instead.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship from a Taiwanese government body or university. Furthermore, you have never previously had a Taiwan scholarship withdrawn.

How to apply

You should submit your application to your local Taiwanese representative office, the diplomatic mission of the Republic of China in your country. You must also apply separately for a place at a university in Taiwan. Each representative office sets its own deadlines. An interview will take place prior to the selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

The number of scholarships depends on Taiwan’s annual budget and is allocated among the individual countries; therefore, places are limited and academic results play a major role. You must also secure a place at university and pass an interview. Applicants who clearly meet the academic requirements and prepare both applications well in advance have good prospects. Knowledge of Chinese is an advantage if your degree programme is taught in Chinese.
