About this scholarship

Scholarships for the Tordesillas Doctoral College

You will receive a scholarship of up to 1,067 EUR for a research stay of up to 6 months at a partner university in Spain or Portugal. The funding covers a research placement abroad, during which you will work alongside a research team in your field of specialism. The scholarships are provided by the Grupo Tordesillas, a network of Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian universities which runs joint doctoral programmes in fields such as psychology, physics and public health. Only a small number of scholarships are awarded in each call for applications, usually one per country.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are enrolled on an official PhD programme.
  • University: Your university is a member of the Tordesillas Doctoral College, which is responsible for the call for applications; examples include the University of Seville, the University of Valencia, the University of Coimbra and ISCTE in Lisbon.
  • Field of study: Your subject matches the college you apply to, for example psychology, physics or public health.
  • Where you go: You are undertaking your research placement at another partner university in Spain or Portugal.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The key requirement is that you are studying at a member university.
  • Research plan: You must submit a work plan setting out a budget for your stay.

How to apply

You send your application to the Grupo Tordesillas during the open call window. The dates vary by college and year. After the deadline, the network scores the applications and publishes a provisional decision before the final one.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is highly selective. You must be a PhD student in a specific subject area at one of the designated member universities. In each call for applications, only a few scholarships are awarded, often just one per country. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet the requirements of the university and the subject area, and submit a well-founded, thoroughly costed research plan in good time, your chances are good.
