What the Global Cities Program gives you

You spend one summer split across two cities and earn a full quarter of academic credit. It runs in two back-to-back parts. First, about five weeks abroad at a partner university (in the past this was Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, with Milan and Amsterdam also used). Then about six weeks at UCLA in Los Angeles. In the second part you study alongside the international students you met abroad, so you build a cross-cultural network on top of the credits. UCLA's International Education Office (IEO) runs the program. A related Global Cities Scholarship helped cover the costs.

Who can apply

• Your university: You are a current UCLA student.
• Academic standing: You are in good academic standing at UCLA (no failing record, not on probation).
• Enrolment: You study full time during the program, because it counts as a full quarter of credit.
• Field of study: Any subject is welcome. Courses cover the social, political and cultural background of both cities.

How to apply

You register through UCLA (MyUCLA), accept the participation agreement and pay a non-refundable deposit of 300 US dollars to hold your place. Then upload a copy of your passport by 1 April. For the scholarship, you apply separately through UCLA's AcademicWorks portal with your UCLA login.

How realistic are your chances?

This is open only to UCLA students, so the pool is small from the start. There is no grade cut-off beyond good academic standing. A well-matched UCLA student who registers and pays the deposit on time can secure a spot. One catch: the program has not been openly advertised in its original IEO form since Summer 2022 and may have moved into UCLA's UCEAP study-abroad offerings. Check current availability with the IEO before you plan around it.
