UC3M Complementary Aid for students in financial hardship

You get a one-off payment of up to 3,000 EUR to help you keep studying when your family's finances suddenly worsen. The money is meant to cover a concrete emergency, not your general living costs. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) pays it, funded by the Comunidad de Madrid regional government. To qualify you must be in a recognised hardship situation and keep up good grades.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at UC3M in an official Bachelor's or Master's degree. Non-university masters, doctorates, specialisation courses and the university's own in-house titles do not count.
• Grades (Bachelor): You have finished at least one semester with an average (out of 10) of at least 5 in engineering, science and health subjects, or 6 in social sciences, law and humanities. You are enrolled in at least 30 credits, or 18 in your first semester.
• Grades (Master): You are admitted and enrolled in at least 30 credits, with an average of at least 6. If you have no grades yet, your entry mark counts instead.
• Hardship: Your family income has dropped sharply because of a difficult event, such as job loss, permanent full disability or death of the main earner, or being a victim of terrorism or gender-based violence. Other well-documented emergencies can also count.
• Income limit: Your family income stays below the thresholds set in the call for applications.
• Nationality: You are Spanish or from another EU country. Non-EU applicants need a residence permit in Spain. A student-only permit does not qualify, but international-protection applicants in the transitional period can apply.
• No double funding: You do not receive another public or private grant for the same purpose. You cannot combine this aid with general grants from the Spanish Education Ministry or the Basque Parliament for the same academic year.
• Degree level: You do not already hold a degree at the same or a higher level than the one you are applying for.

How to apply

You apply online through UC3M's electronic platform (Sede Electrónica) and attach your documents as PDFs. For 2025/26 the window runs from 15 September 2025 to 29 April 2026, with several assessment rounds in between (November, February and May). A committee reviews the documents. There are no interviews.

How realistic are your chances?

This aid is targeted narrowly. You must study at one specific university, meet clear grade thresholds, and prove a real drop in family income through a recognised hardship situation. That keeps the eligible group small, so if you clearly fit and can document your case well, your prospects are good. The committee decides on your paperwork alone, so a complete, well-evidenced application matters most. Apply to an early round rather than waiting.
