Three law scholarships at Ulster University

Ulster University's School of Law in Belfast, Northern Ireland, runs three separate scholarships for law and criminology students. Each covers different courses and different applicants, so read them side by side and pick the one that fits your programme. The three are the A&O Shearman Scholarships, the Law and Criminology Scholarship, and the TJI Scholarship.

A&O Shearman Scholarships: You get about 8,900 EUR (GBP 7,610), which covers your full tuition fee for the LLM in Access to Justice. Two are awarded each academic year, funded by the international law firm A&O Shearman. During the course you give real legal advice to clients at the university's Law Clinic in areas such as employment, social security and family law, supervised by staff.

Law and Criminology Scholarship: You get about 2,600 EUR (GBP 2,200) off your tuition fee. It stacks with the GBP 2,000 International Postgraduate Scholarship, so together that is up to about 4,900 EUR (GBP 4,200) off your fees. This one is for new international students on selected Belfast law and criminology courses.

TJI Scholarship: One award for a student on an LLM in Gender, Conflict and Human Rights, or Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice. The amount is not stated in the available sources.

Who can apply

• A&O Shearman: You are accepted onto the LLM in Access to Justice at the Belfast campus, full-time or part-time. It is aimed at students from Northern Ireland. Once you are accepted, you are invited to apply.
• Law and Criminology: You are a new international student (not from the UK or Republic of Ireland) paying the international fee rate yourself, starting a full-time first year in September on one of these courses: LLB Law (Graduate Entry), LLM International Commercial Law and ADR, LLM/MSc Legal Innovation and Technology Law, or MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice.
• TJI: You have applied for one of the two eligible LLM programmes by the closing date. Any nationality can apply, including from Northern Ireland, the rest of the UK and Ireland.
• Grades: Academic strength counts for all three. The TJI award also weighs your financial need and how you would help your community.

How to apply

For the A&O Shearman award, send the scholarship application form to the Course Director once you are accepted. For the TJI Scholarship, email a personal statement (max 500 words) and your CV with full academic results, using the subject 'TJI Scholarship'. The Law and Criminology Scholarship needs no separate form; you are assessed through your normal course application.

How realistic are your chances?

Each award is cut narrowly to one course or one applicant group, so the competing pool is small. The A&O Shearman is the tightest, with only two places for Access to Justice students, so a strong fit matters. If you clearly meet the course and background conditions and apply within the course timeline, your prospects are solid. Check the current cycle, as some intakes close well before the course start.
