UWE Bristol Employability Bursary (Study Abroad)

You get a one-off payment of up to about EUR 1,150 (£1,000) for a semester or year abroad at one of UWE Bristol's partner universities. You do not pay it back. It helps cover the extra costs of studying overseas, such as travel, insurance or living expenses. The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) pays it to students from low-income households. You can apply again in a later academic year if you take part in a new eligible activity, but an activity that spans two years pays out only once.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are fully registered as an undergraduate at UWE Bristol.
• Nationality: You are a UK home student.
• Student Finance: You have a Student Finance assessment, even if you take out no loans.
• Financial need: Student Finance assesses your household income at £30,000 (about EUR 34,500) a year or less.
• Your activity: You have a confirmed place on a study abroad exchange at a partner university.
• Field of study: Any subject qualifies, as long as the exchange is not a compulsory part of your course.

How to apply

First secure your place on a study abroad exchange. The Study Abroad Team then sends you an application link. Your application goes through two checks: one confirms the activity is eligible, the other confirms your enrolment and household income. There is no fixed deadline, but the activity must take place within the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This bursary is narrowly cut. You must be a UWE Bristol undergraduate, a UK home student, and have a household income at or below £30,000. If you meet those conditions and have a confirmed exchange place, your prospects are strong, since it is a set amount rather than a contest for a few spots. Sort out your Student Finance assessment early, as you cannot qualify without it.
