What you get

This working grant pays 18,000 EUR a year, transferred monthly in 12 instalments of 1,500 EUR from January to December. You use the money to develop or finish a complex, innovative project in visual arts or media art. The City of Vienna's Culture Department (MA 7) funds it. Up to 12 grants are awarded each year, and applying is free.

Who can apply

• Age: You are at least 18 years old.
• Where you live: Your main residence has been in Vienna for at least 3 years.
• Your background: You have finished a relevant degree in visual arts or media art, or your CV shows professional artistic work.
• Not for students: You cannot apply if you are enrolled, including PhD candidates, and the project cannot be part of your studies.
• Type of project: Only artistic work qualifies. The grant does not fund academic or artistic research, commercial or educational work, gallery or trade-fair projects, or pure material purchases such as instruments or equipment.
• Timing: You may apply once per year. If you already held this grant, you must wait 5 full calendar years before applying again. If you were rejected, you can reapply the next year.

How to apply

You apply through the online form on the City of Vienna website, open only from 1 to 30 June. External expert juries review all applications and recommend who gets funded. The department makes the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrow: you must have lived in Vienna for at least three years and show a professional arts background, and only up to 12 grants go out each year. That keeps the field smaller than for open scholarships, but one high-value award still draws strong applicants. If you clearly meet the residence and professional criteria and submit a convincing artistic project, your prospects are realistic.
