About this scholarship
What the Illumination Foundation Grant gives you
You will receive a scholarship to fund your studies, research or training in the field of lighting technology and light design (lighting technology). The foundation does not set a fixed amount and decides on a case-by-case basis. Smaller amounts may be awarded, for example to cover materials, additional costs associated with a dissertation or a study visit abroad. More substantial, multi-year funding is also possible. Doctoral studies and research projects are generally funded for 2 years, with the intention of continuing the funding if the interim results are positive. The funds come from the ‘Bertil och Britt Svenssons Stiftelse’, which was established in 1985 by the founder of Fagerhult AB. To date, the foundation has disbursed around 232 million SEK (approximately 21 million EUR).
Who can apply
- Who you are: You are applying as an individual, for example as a student, researcher or lighting designer. Organisations may also apply, but only for projects and not for personal grants.
- Your topic: Your plan must build knowledge in light and lighting. General electrical engineering does not count; the focus is specifically lighting technology and light design.
- Where you study: Any organisation is fine, but your work must have a connection to Sweden.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Not funded: Product development or manufacture by companies.
How to apply
Applications are made online via the FundPro portal, where you must first create an account. There are two application rounds per year. The deadlines are 1 April (decision in May) and 1 October at 16:00 (decision in November). You may apply in Swedish or English, although Swedish is preferred.
How realistic are your chances?
The scope is narrow: your work must relate specifically to the field of lighting technology and lighting design, meaning that far fewer applicants apply than for a general engineering scholarship. If your project clearly serves this purpose and you submit a concrete plan and a budget, your chances are good. The foundation allocates limited funds amongst the applications received, so a focused, well-reasoned application is more important than a lengthy one.
