About this scholarship

Carnegie Awards for medical research

You will receive a one-off project grant of up to 400,000 SEK (about 35,000 EUR) for research, teaching or training that directly contributes to saving lives in the event of accidents. The funding may be extended for up to three consecutive years. Recent grants have generally ranged from around 200,000 SEK to 335,000 SEK (approximately 17,500 to 29,000 EUR) per project. The funding comes from the Carnegiestiftelsen, a Swedish foundation established in 1911 that is dedicated to emergency medicine and lifesaving.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are leading a research, teaching or training project, usually as a researcher in the field of emergency medicine or surgery.
  • Your project: The project must be directly aimed at saving lives in the event of accidents. General medical measures that do not serve this purpose will not be funded.
  • Ethics approval: You can provide evidence that an ethics committee has approved your project.
  • Field of study: Medicine and health sciences, with a focus on life-saving care and emergency medicine.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Where you work: Any university or research body. The award supports work carried out in Sweden.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to the Foundation’s research contact at Linköping University Hospital. There is no specific application form. Applications must be accompanied by a project proposal, a research or teaching plan, ethical approval, a brief CV and a cost estimate. There are two submission deadlines each year: 13 October, with a decision in November, and 26 February, with a decision in April.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: your project must aim to save lives in the event of accidents, which limits the scope to researchers in emergency medicine and related fields. If your work clearly fits this focus and you can provide ethical approval and a sound plan, your chances are good. If you apply by the earlier deadline, you will have two opportunities within a year.
