Forskraft Foundation (Theodor Adelswärd Travel Grant)

As a Master’s student, you will receive a travel allowance of up to 50,000 SEK (about 4,500 EUR); as a PhD student, the allowance is up to 100,000 SEK (about 8,900 EUR). These funds are intended to finance fieldwork or a research stay abroad. The grant applies to a single research project and is not a monthly payment. As a PhD student, you may spread the funds over more than one year of your doctoral research. The Swedish foundation, which was established in 1997, supports research into international relations, cooperation and peacebuilding.

Who can apply

• Level: You are writing a Master’s thesis, working on a PhD thesis or going abroad as a visiting scholar.
• Where you study: You are enrolled at a Swedish university or university of applied sciences. If you are studying outside Sweden, you cannot apply.
• Where you go: You are travelling abroad for fieldwork or a research placement. The scholarship does not cover an exchange year, an internship or attendance at a conference.
• Topic: Your project has a clear international dimension and aligns with one of the Foundation’s key focus areas: international organisations and cooperation, peacekeeping and conflict resolution, human rights, or energy and environmental issues.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying in Sweden.
• Timing: Your journey must not have started yet and cannot begin before November of the year in which you submit your application.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Foundation’s form between 1 June and 15 September. You will need a CV, a certificate of enrolment, academic transcripts, a signed statement from your supervisor and a project description. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The committee meets in October and will notify successful applicants in writing.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is narrowly defined: you must be studying in Sweden, and your project must relate to specific topics in the fields of international politics and the environment. Consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. The committee assesses your academic performance, the quality of your proposal and the feasibility of the trip. If your topic clearly aligns with the foundation’s priorities and your supervisor supports a well-planned trip, your chances are good.
