About this scholarship
John Rettig Travel Scholarship
You will receive a one-off travel grant to study economics or industry-related subjects abroad for up to one year. The amount of the grant is determined on an individual basis and is approximately 3,600 EUR. The money covers the additional costs of studying abroad, such as travel, accommodation and living expenses, even if the course itself is free of charge as part of an exchange programme. The fund was established by Antonie Rettig in the name of her late husband and is administered by the municipality of Gävle in Sweden.
Who can apply
- Connection to Gävle: You were born or grew up in Gävle, or have lived there for several years.
- Where you go: You are studying or planning to study abroad – outside Sweden.
- Field of study: You are studying a subject in the field of commerce or industry, such as business administration, business management, economics or industrial management and logistics.
- School qualification: You have completed gymnasium, Sweden’s upper secondary education.
- Age: The fund is aimed at young people.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they can demonstrate the required connection to Gävle.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the City of Gävle’s e-service. This is only open each year from 1 to 30 April, meaning the application deadline is 30 April. You log in using a Swedish e-ID (BankID) and state what you are currently studying, what you will be studying abroad and in which country. You will also need a confirmation of admission from the foreign higher education institution. If you do not yet have this, your scholarship may be approved on condition that you submit it before the funds are paid out.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is awarded on a highly selective basis. You need to have a genuine connection to Gävle, be studying a subject in the field of business or industry, and have a plan to study abroad. This means that the pool of applicants is small. So, if you clearly meet these requirements and can provide evidence of a place at a university abroad, your chances are good.
