TCO - TCO's scholarship fund to Olof Palme Memorial

What you get

You will receive a scholarship to fund trade union studies abroad. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation (TCO) has set up this fund in memory of Prime Minister Olof Palme. Your course must have a clear objective linked to the trade union movement’s commitment to peace, freedom and democracy, or to the social, economic and professional interests of workers. You will be responsible for covering part of your travel costs yourself. The amount is not disclosed; it depends on your travel plans and your budget.

Who can apply

• Membership: You are a member of a trade union that belongs to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (TCO).
• Where you go: You’re studying abroad, not in Sweden.
• Purpose: Your journey has a clear purpose, linked either to the trade union movement’s commitment to peace, freedom and democracy, or to the social, economic and professional interests of workers.
• Your own contribution: You are prepared to cover part of the costs yourself.
• Study focus: Your topic concerns trade union and social issues.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are members of a trade union affiliated to the TCO.
• Not for events alone: Applications for the scholarship cannot be made solely for the purpose of attending an international congress or conference.
• Priority: Where several candidates are equally well qualified, priority will be given to first-time applicants, elected trade union representatives and younger candidates.

How to apply

Complete the fund’s application form and enclose a realistic travel itinerary and a cost estimate. Submit the application to your trade union by 1 April or 1 October. Your trade union will then forward the application with a written recommendation. Without this recommendation, your application will not be considered.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a member of a trade union affiliated to the TCO, travel abroad and link your trip to trade union issues – so the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you meet these criteria, can present a clear objective and a budget, and have the backing of your trade union, your chances are good. First-time applicants, elected representatives and younger members have an additional advantage.
