What you get

You can apply for money to support your medical research in Sweden, in one of two forms. A scholarship of up to 250,000 SEK (about 22,000 EUR) is paid directly to you. Or a research grant of 250,000 SEK (about 22,000 EUR) or more goes to your university or research institution, which may use up to 25% of it for overhead costs. You say in the application which of the two you want. The money can cover project running costs, stays abroad, or travel to a conference where you present your own results. It comes from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien) in Stockholm. The total pot for the 2025 round was 1,227,000 SEK (about 108,000 EUR).

Who can apply

• Level: You are a doctoral student (PhD candidate) or a researcher who already holds a doctorate.
• Field: Your work is in the medical sciences.
• Where you work: You work and are employed at a Swedish university or another public research body.
• Recent doctorate preferred: Among researchers, priority goes to those who finished their doctorate within the past seven years. Time out for parental leave and similar is added back, so it does not count against you.
• What it cannot fund: You cannot get money for work already finished by the time the decision is made.

How to apply

You apply online through the Academy's application system. The next call opens in 2027; the 2025 round ran from 1 September to 31 October. You get the result by email about three months after the deadline, and it also appears in your online account.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrowly cut. You must be a doctoral student or recent PhD in the medical sciences, employed at a Swedish research institution, which keeps the applicant pool small. If you clearly fit those conditions, and especially if you finished your doctorate within the last seven years, your prospects are solid. With a total pot of around 1,227,000 SEK spread across scholarships and larger grants, a well-defined, focused request stands the best chance.
