Ernst Hawermans travel grant

You get a travel grant (the amount is not published) to fund your own study or research trip abroad in architecture and urban planning. The sum is based on your project, so your application must set out your planned costs. It is a one-off grant for a single trip outside Sweden, awarded once a year by the Ernst Hawermans fund, run by Sveriges Arkitekter (the Swedish architects' association). The trip must be your own project, not a group study trip organised by your school.

Who can apply

• University: You are an active student at one of four Swedish universities: Chalmers (Gothenburg), KTH (Stockholm), LTH (Lund) or Umeå School of Architecture.
• Programme: You are enrolled in a programme leading to an architecture degree, as an architecture or research student.
• Field of study: Your trip is about architecture and urban planning.
• Where you go: The trip takes you abroad, outside Sweden.
• Nationality and birthplace: You were born in Sweden and are a Swedish citizen. You need both, proven with a residence certificate (personbevis) or a copy of a valid Swedish passport.
• Travel style: Sustainable ways of travelling are preferred, but not required.

How to apply

You apply by email using the fund's application form. Attach proof that you are currently enrolled and a project description of up to two A4 pages covering your purpose, goal, method and estimated costs. The deadline is 25 February 2026 at 12:00. Only complete applications are considered.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrow: you must study architecture at one of four named Swedish universities and be both born in Sweden and a Swedish citizen. That keeps the eligible group small. If you meet those conditions, your chances rest mainly on a clear, well-planned project with a realistic cost estimate. A trip that follows a sustainable travel style is favoured.
