What the Kaleido scholarship gives you

You get a free solo exhibition in Kaleido's gallery in Uppsala, Sweden, running for about three to four weeks. Alongside the exhibition space you receive free opening-night invitation cards, a paid advertisement and a press release, so your show reaches an audience and the local press. Kaleido is a craft cooperative run by around a dozen makers. Each year it gives its scholarship to one young craftsperson. The award has run every year since 2001.

Who can apply

• Field: You work in arts and crafts, for example textile, ceramics, silver or leather.
• Study or graduation: You are still studying at a post-secondary art, craft or design college, or you finished such a programme no more than three years ago.
• Residence: You live and work in Sweden.
• Career stage: The award is for makers starting out. There is no age limit, but the focus is on early-career craftspeople.

How to apply

You submit an application to Kaleido when the call is open, usually with samples of your work. A jury of outside art experts and Kaleido's own curators picks the scholar.

How realistic are your chances?

The rules are narrow: you must live and work in Sweden, work in craft, and be either still studying or within three years of finishing an art or design college. That keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. Only one person is chosen each year, so it stays competitive, but a strong, distinctive portfolio that clearly fits the early-career craft profile has genuine prospects.
