Karolinska Institutet foundation scholarship (Stiftelsestipendier)

You receive a one-off payment, usually between 5,000 and 20,000 SEK (about 440 to 1,750 EUR). It is paid into the bank account you give in your application. The money comes from several foundations run by Karolinska Institutet (KI), a medical university in Stockholm. A scholarship committee recommends who gets it, once a year. You can apply on the basis of financial need, scientific merit, or both.

Who can apply

• University: You are a registered student at Karolinska Institutet.
• Level: You study at bachelor's or master's level. PhD students and people who already hold a doctorate cannot apply.
• Study progress: You have completed at least 1 year of study, and you still have study time left at least until the spring semester of 2027.
• Financial need (one route): You have limited or no right to Swedish student finance (CSN), or you face difficult financial circumstances. If you own sellable assets such as shares or funds, you are not prioritised. An owner-occupied flat or house does not count as such an asset. Giving up student finance voluntarily also removes priority.
• Scientific merit (the other route): You have done scientific work beyond your normal coursework or thesis, and you can show a research plan. More advanced work scores higher. A plan alone counts for less than a running project with a written-up manuscript, and a running project with an accepted or published article from KI counts most.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects taught at KI.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome. As a foreign citizen you may also qualify for Swedish student finance, depending on your country.
• Not for travel: This is not a travel grant. Applications for travel costs are rejected.

How to apply

You apply online through the KI Prisma system, where you first create a personal account. The application window opens on 18 August 2026 and closes on 29 September 2026 at 14:00. All applicants hear the decision in November 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is limited to KI students who have already completed a year of study, so the pool is smaller than for open national scholarships. Because the money is spread across several foundations, there are several grants rather than a single prize. If you clearly fit one of the two routes, either genuine financial need or documented research work outside your normal studies, and attach every required certificate, your prospects are good.
