KTH Royal Institute of Technology – General Student Scholarships

What you get

You receive a one-off payment of 2,000 to 40,000 SEK (about 175 to 3,500 EUR). It is paid once, not monthly. The exact sum depends on how many people apply, how much return the funds earn that year, and your grade average. The money comes from around 20 small foundations that donors gave to KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm over the years, all advertised together in one call. There is no living-cost supplement and no recurring payment.

Who can apply

• University: You are actively enrolled as a student at KTH in Stockholm. Students from other universities cannot apply.
• Programme: You study a civil engineering, engineering or bachelor's programme (civilingenjörs-, högskoleingenjörs- or kandidatprogram).
• Excluded fields: You do not study materials engineering or materials design. Those students have their own separate foundations.
• Study progress: You were registered as an active student for the whole academic year, with no graduation and no study break. You have passed all compulsory courses of years 1 and 2, roughly 120 ECTS credits.
• Income limit: Your total taxable yearly income is no more than about 180,200 SEK (roughly 15,800 EUR).
• Grades: Selection is mainly by grade average. At least 80% of the funds go to applicants by grade. In a recent year the effective minimum average was around 4.40 on the Swedish scale.
• Financial need: Up to 20% of the funds can go to applicants with strong financial reasons instead of on grades alone.

A few foundations favour specific applicants: four family foundations prefer people who can prove kinship with the original donor, one prefers applicants whose father worked at Alfa Laval for more than 10 years, and one prefers applicants from Gothenburg. The family foundations are not open to engineering (högskoleingenjörs) students.

How to apply

You apply online through the KTH scholarship portal, which needs a KTH login. The application window runs from about 15 January to 15 February each year, with the deadline at midnight CET. Your grade average and credits are pulled automatically from KTH's records. Decisions are sent by email, usually before midsummer in June.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is limited to KTH students in specific programmes who meet a clear income cap and have finished the first two years, so the eligible group is already narrow. Selection is mostly automatic and based on grade average, so a strong record is decisive. The recent cut-off near 4.40 shows the bar is high. If your grades are excellent and you fit the income limit, or if you can document real financial need for the 20% needs-based share, your prospects are solid.
