KTH scholarship for applicants with special personal reasons

You receive a one-off payment of 10,000 to 20,000 SEK (about 900 to 1,800 EUR) if you study at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and can show a special personal reason for needing the money. The exact amount depends on how many people apply, how much money is available and applicants' grade averages. The money comes from KTH's own foundation funds. A scholarship council (Stipendierådet, the committee that decides awards) picks the winners. This is a separate pot set aside for students who can explain a personal hardship, not just for those with top grades.

Who can apply

• University: You study at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
• Programme: You are on a civil engineering (civilingenjör), engineering (högskoleingenjör) or bachelor programme. Architecture students cannot apply, as they have their own foundations.
• Active enrolment: You were registered as an active student for the whole academic year. You took no study break and did not already finish a degree.
• Study progress: By 13 September you have passed the compulsory course credits for years 1 and 2 of your programme.
• Income limit: Your total taxable income before tax (from work, business and capital) is no more than 180,200 SEK for the tax year.
• Personal reason: You can describe a special personal reason that explains why you need the money.
• Where you study: The money is for studying at KTH. It does not cover exchange or study-abroad periods.

How to apply

You apply through KTH's scholarship application and add a separate written statement explaining your special personal reasons. The application window runs from 15 January to 15 February. There is no interview. The council decides based on the documents you submit.

How realistic are your chances?

This pot is deliberately small: the council may award at most 20 percent of the foundation income this way. Only KTH students who meet the income limit, the study-progress rule and can document a genuine personal reason qualify. If you clearly fit those conditions and write a concrete, well-evidenced statement of your situation, your prospects are reasonable, because the eligible group is limited to KTH students in real hardship.
